January means detoxing for many, so why not try a detox delivery service if you're feeling short of willpower (and low-fat shortbread if you're not!). Plus, a competition for budding Delias, gorgeous casseroles to keep in the freezer and the inside track on food alerts.
Cook It!
Know any keen young cooks age 10-14? Encourage them to enter Cook It!, a competition sponsored by Sacla, where they devise a menu of family dishes, or Write It! open to budding 15-18 year old food writers. Prizes include a day with Gennaro Contaldo at his restaurant, Passione; a culinary weekend in Edinburgh; Italian cookery course for six at La Cucina Caldesi, the UK's leading Italian cookery school, hampers and books.
Simply casseroles
Regular readers may remember my coverage of Simple Simon pies a few months ago. Well, the company also offers just-like-homemade casseroles – Mexican Chicken Chilli and Aberdeen Angus Beef and Mushroom are particularly good - which you keep in the freezer and bring out to defrost and heat up in a few minutes. Each casserole serves 2: perfect with fluffy mash or roasted veg.

Food standards alerts
Did you know you can sign up to receive free email alerts from the Food Standards Agency, letting you know about batches of foods that have been withdrawn, or potential food safety risks.
Detox on delivery!
If you’re struggling with your detox, up the willpower with noshdetoxdelivery. Fresh, organic, gluten-, dairy- and nut-free meals are delivered to your door each morning. The food is filling: mine included mushroom risotto, lamb rogan josh and prawns with noodles. I tried it out for only three days which wasn’t long enough to see tangible results but I did start to feel less sluggish…
The spice of life - in a cup
A common dietary toxin is coffee, so if you’re sworn off caffeine you’ll find these spiced teas from Yogi Tea® a more than acceptable substitute. Detox is a cleansing blend of 15 herbs and spices including cinnamon, fennel and juniper, while energising Revitalise contains ginger, lemongrass, dandelion, cardamom and rosehips. From Holland & Barrett and other healthfood shops.
Low-fat shortbread?
Yes, it's true! Patersons has produced a low-fat shortbread that is perfect for the likes of me who find it hard to stick to any diet or detox. I was sceptical, but the low-fat version looks just like standard shortbread fingers and, while not quite as buttery, still hits the spot when you need that mid-afternoon sugar fix.
