As you know, Delia uses the aunt bessies frozen mash in a couple of the recipes in the latest book. its about £1.70 for 650g. I suspect Delia chose this brand over others because it has not nastry ingredients, its just how you would make mash at home.
Well, when Mum was down, we went out shopping. She did her usual of insisting we visit every shop within a 20 mile radius.............

So, we ended up in an Iceland, a shop I've not been in for years. Firstly, they had some excellent offers on. Seconly, they do a bigger 1 kilo bag of frozen mash for just £1.
Ingredients are as follows:

potato, water, butter, milk, salt, white pepper.

Nothing else at all. I've tried it and it is yummy yummy!!!!

Well worth trying if you have a store near you. I've noticed Morrisons own brand of this also has all manner of rubbish in the ingredients list.....

Funnily enough James I paid a visit to Iceland Saturday and was surprised how much better they were. Hadn't visited for about a year. Didn't have very much room in my freezer but bought fish in batter for OH and lovely big bag of prawns. I also noticed they had a large chest of Weight Watcher meals for £1 each - lots cheaper than say Waitrose. They seem to stock more dry goods than they used to. I will be making more visits. Hi James, when I lived in the UK I used Iceland quite a lot, I could get the bus into town, have a good look round the market, do my shopping in Iceland (everything milk butter cheese sugar,) in fact all the heavy stuff. And it was good value for money too with all the special offers. Then have another look round, get the bus back and then was able to sort my cupboards out and freezer for when they delivered it FREE later that morning. Absolutely No Hassle and the delivery guy was really nice.

I will certainly be paying a visit after my holiday Yummy. They really were far better than I remember them being. Had some really good products. Lots of ready meal rubbish too of course, but I can ignore all that.

I was really impressed!

Just noticed this thread.

I also have not been to iceland for many years, I understand that if you spend over £25 you can have your produce delivered to your home....a neighbour along the road has a semi regular iceland van turn up.

I stopped going there when i discovered what a good and trusty friend my freezer is and make my own "ready meals" but it is lovely to have the odd lazy thing in there.

No room at the moment but i think i will pop down to my local one soon.

Delia does say in the Cheats book we'd soon be discovering more cheats products of our own and I was very interested to read this post!

I'd never have dreamed of going into Iceland (I thought it was a bit like FarmFoods and such like !!!!!!) but I know how discerning you all are here and on James' recommendation I will call in tomorrow and check it out!!

Wonder if I will see Kerry Katona shopping there ??

Iceland was an excellent recommendation, James!

Went there earlier, and some extremely unexpected and interesting things. I got a bag frozen ready - roasted mediterranean vegetables which will be nice when I want to do a vegetable lasagne but I am rushed. They were a quid! I can't wait to try their frozen mixed seafood - langoustines in the shell, mussles, calamari rings, etc in the seafood linguine recipe! Provided the quality is okay there are definately some savings to be made to my grocery bill if I have time to run round there!

I'll let you know when I have tried the frozen mash!!!!! I'm a frozen mash virgin!

Glad you were impressed Jeff. As I said, they do still sell alot of rubbish, but be honest, which supermarket does not.... Its a case of trial and error.

I shall be going back, but my freezer is groaning at the moment!

That's good to hear. I've always given Iceland a wide berth as went in there once and there was nothing worth buying but will try it out again. With food prices rocketing we all need to try to find bargain buys... in fact, maybe we should rename creative corner as credit crunch corner and use it to list all our money-saving stuff!
