Are you Cheating outside the UK - how do you fine it - I can get quite a few of the ingredients here or good substitutes - the one thing we lack though is ready made pastry cases. I have done about 35 of the recipes -great book.
G
Yes it is difficult Gav, I have a few probs too. Not only that , it is such a darn long way just to get one "cheat" item for me that I often cheat on the cheat (so to speak )
Yummy
I am not finding it too difficult to get cheat ingredients. Certainly cannot get exactly what our Delia suggests but it is not too difficult to find a substitute. I also would appreciate the ready made pastry cases.
I am also loving the book and the speed at what some of the dishes can be created.
I even suggested my mother pic up a copy on her recent visit to the UK and she seemed to think she would find substitute ingredients where she lives in Australia.
cheers

I have to plan the shopping list for the trips now, same as Yummy we have a long way to travel to the shops. I like the round ready rolled pastry I can buy here and will use that instead of the ready baked, that I can't.
The HTC book is great. I gotta go some to catch you up Gav. I keep making the baked Greek lamb, we love it :0)
We have the best of both worlds in the Gibraltar Area. Spanish shops/supermarkets in Spain and British shopping (including Morissons) in Gibraltar.
Have you ever considered making your own pastry cases and freezing them. If you make a lot, then you can use them as you need them.
I would suggest you try this bakery for pastry cases: http://www.martys.co.za Let me know if you are successful.
Thats great thanks so much - are you in South Africa too?
G
Try also http://www.freezerland.co.za/ Maybe Makro too, as they have a lot of bulk catering foods.
They may have pastry cases as well but I am not sure.
I eat myself around the world so I know South Africa well.
Wow Bigeater - love the look of those websites. I don't suppose you have any suggestions where I can get similar things in Joburg?
I would also love your suggestions on where to get fresh seafood, if you have any (am sure Gavster would also like similar info fo the CT area)
Many cheers
Saucey
I am not sure about Johannesburg but I think that the Cape Town Fish Market and Ocean Basket sell fresh fish so you might want to give them a ring in Johannesburg as I think they have franchises in your part of the world. The same applies to Cape Town but Woolworths in Cape Town does have a good fish monger. The best places to get fresh fish in Cape Town is either Hout Bay or Kalk Bay. Hout Bay has a couple of good fresh fish shops and in Kalk Bay you have to wait for the boats to arrive to see the catch. The one in Hout Bay is called Snoekies and you can buy the whole fish which they will fillet for you. It is all dependent on the fish they have coming in on the day. The old fish market used to be in Salt River but I am not sure if it is there any more.
You do know Cape Town very well Bigeater. My OH loves waiting for the fishing boats in Kalk Bay and we always go for a look when we are in CT. There is also a fabulous restaurant there called Harbour View. The views are really lovely and the food excellent.
Cheers

Yes. Cape Town is one of my favourite places. The fish is really good there and as good as Australia.
welcome aboard big eater....I am assuming your a newbie........you have more in common with Saucey than you might think.......
and its not just overseas people who have trouble with cheating!!! its all about interpretation and making use of resiources avaliable to you, in what ever country/situation you are in......
basically cheating is acceptable, depending on the ingresients you have to hand.

Nowadays with couriers you can fly anything to anywhere so if you need something particular the you could fly it out from the UK! But then I suppose the whole idea of cheat is to keep it cheap! Maybe Gavster should start a Delia's Cheat import business in South Africa.
Not exactly, Bigeater, the cheat is to save time, not money. It is much cheaper to mash your own potatoes than to buy Aunt Bessies, or to make your own pastry cases instead of bought. (I'm days behind you on this thread, but you might notice) Bramble ;-)
Bramle. It is cheaper but the idea is to cheat ? Ideal for those who do not have time or don't want to make from scratch?
I am behind too sorry.
