As we have only one week left in August to choose the September cook along recipe I have looked on the previous threads and done a quick tally of peoples choices. It was decided to do a main dish this time and Hung Shao Pork received 5 and the Borolo Beef 4 Chicken Basque was also suggested and a number said that they didin't mind which and would "go with the flow".
Any more suggestions? If not then we will go wih the Hung Shao Pork, a cheaper cut of meat, something to take into consideration in the economic climate.
All contributions glady received.
Yummy
In view of Delia's comments about the qualities of belly pork in this recipe, would it be sacrilege to use a different cut of pork? There is no way I would ever get my OH to eat belly pork! I'd use tenderloin but I realise that may be making a totally different dish - or maybe not???
I think you are right Elpe and it would make a different dish. Is the reason your husband doesn't like it due to the fat content? Delia is saying that it is the gelatinous quality of the underlying fat and skin that creates the taste and sauce.
It hasn't been decided yet anyway, we have until the end of the week to pick the dish.
Yummy
I would like to try the pork dish. I have some pork belly in the freezer waiting for some inspiration.
How does the cook-a-long work Yummy? Does everyone take a photo of their dish?
cheers
Saucey
Yes Saucey, We each report back on here and say how we felt the dish went, if we made any alterations to the ingredients, how tasty it was and if (or not) well received by family or guests. We take a picture then submit it to Dessert Queen for inclusion in the web album she does for us all. Details of that on her profile if you don't already know about it. Good Fun !!!
Yummy
I`d love to take part, Yummy, but cholesterol is too high for pork belly. I`ll maybe do what Elpe suggests, the tenderloin, but I think it would be v different.
crumbs :-)
Sounds good. I have seen the web album. Was just wondering if it is compulsory to post a photo when joining in on the cook-a-long.
Look forward to hearing which recipe you decide on.
Cheers
Saucey
Don't worry Saucey, it isn't compulsory to submit a photo. As Elpe and 'Crumbs says you can also adjust the recipe, and who knows come up with a delicious variant of the original dish. Using the tenderloin sounds good too, I imagine it would turn out a bit like Char Sui (sp) Pork.
Yummy
I tried Ling's recipe for slow roasted belly pork last year after much urging from my LOH who loves that particular piece of meat. Have to say, I loved it and amazed myself as I have an all time loathing of any fatty meat. The fat does seem to melt and what is left is wonderfully crispy.
No need to send any pics in if you don't want to, BTW.
DQ xx
I don't like pork Im afraid. But of course, Im a fussy nightmare, so im quite happy to go with the flow and sit this one out and join in when its some I do like. Im sure its ok for people not to participate every month.
DQ, im just about to order from the DR sale catalogue and they have a piece of belly pork on a good offer. Should I give it a go? Mum will join Marc to eat it!!!

Oh, its out of stock anyway, so never mind!!!!!

I have done both Gordon Ramsey's slow roasted belly pork and Jamie Oliver's (from Cook) and they are both lovely are are great as a starter at a braai.
Cheers

I'm keen to join in but my OH wouldn't eat the belly pork either. Could do it just for myself and something else for him but then I could only tell you all what I thought i.e. no input from OH/guests.
Would prefer the Beef in Barolo but will go with the majority.

I'll go along with the Pork Yummy but if the decision is made to cook something else I'll follow suite. Dottie Mayx
I'll give it a try. I don't usually like fatty pork but the recipe sounds interesting. OH looking forward to trying it.
I'm in :-)))
Yummy, do we use Delia's recipes for the Pork or Beef, i.e. Hung Shao Pork with Stir-fry Greens, Beef in Barolo with Parmesan Mashed Pots.? Dottie Mayx
Hi Dottie May, It is looking like the Hung Shao Pork, but we will give it until the weekend (perhaps Friday) then make the definitive choice. All September to do it , so no rush. Will post a little reminder onto Coffee Break on Thursday.
Thanks
Yummy
Dottie,
Think it is one of Delias....

Hung Shao Pork????
count me in....
Many thanks Yummy and Dolly - have printed off both recipes to make sure I have all the ingredients. I see the recipe for the Beef is for 6 persons so I will have to down size if that is the choice, as we are only 2. Dottie Mayx
Maybe it was just me but a word of warning with the beef recipe.
Nothing fatal of course (this is Delia after all) but when I printed it off, the wine amount didn't print coz it's in a different font or something. I didn't notice til after I browned the meat at which point my husband was doing something teccy with the computer and I couldn't get on for half an hour. Was most distressing as really didn't want to mess about with the recipe & my beautiful piece of beef.
Anyway, just make sure it doesn't happen to you if you cook it!
p.s. it was a roaring success btw
I'm not a lover of fatty meats but I'll give the Pork dish a go, if i don't like it I have a son and DIL up the road, I'm sure they'll take it off my hands!!!
