An apple a day
Keeps the doctor away
But if the doctor is cute
Who needs the fruit??

The mixture’s stirred, the wishes made
The pudding basins filled.
The steamer’s on; it’s 9am
And I’m feeling less than thrilled
8 hours has Delia decreed
In the steamer they must stay
Each half hour they call to me -
The water’s boiled away.
Can’t go out; Can’t meet friends
The house is full of steam.
Wallpaper’s peeling; damp marks on the ceiling
I think I just might scream.
5pm Two puddings done!
My relief now turns to sorrow.
Flour smeared husband gives a beam -
“There’s two more to steam to-morrow!”
am i being a bit premature?
in light of the economic downturn can i suggest a frugal recipe?
I am new ti the site and would love to hear from anyone who knows of any good non alcoholic fruit punches that don't taste too sweet and sickly and will appeal to adults

Well, as I posted earlier, I cooked the Beef in Barolo. Accompanied it with the parmesan mash and sauteed cabbage and cauliflower cheese. The beef was meltingly tender. However, I did not like the sauce. I followed the recipe and the result was a rather dull grey/brown looking sauce that didn't taste of very much.
I decided it wouldn't do so I strained off the vegetables in the cooking sauce and then made a reduction of the wine which was left. This made a much more well flavoured sauce and was very nice.
I got my brisket for £3.50 (500g piece) and my wine was £4.99 so it wasn't an overly expensive meal. Would I cook it again? Only maybe.
Will be interested to see what others thought.

I have Clematis Montana flowering which I thought was odd in itself, but yesterday noticed that my Quince bush also has a flower on it..................surely that happens in Spring doesn't it ??
Yummy
Went into my Greenhouse today to water my Peppers. Now have one red and two green ones. Boy, did I jump and so did he/she - there was a Cricket on one of the wooden shelves. It's years and years since I've seen one; had completely forgotten they existed. Has anyone else seen them recently? Dottie Mayx
Bought 2.15 kilos of paleron (a braiser) in Auchan today, it has been cut into 2 pieces so I'm going to try this on the October cookalong. It was on offer and cost 12.70 euros. Not too bad I thought. They also had some lovely looking shin beef but I don't have too much freezer space free at the moment. Biggs
40 years ago this very week ,
Tel , & I became man & wife,
The years sure have gone by so fast,
But we are still in each others lives.
There's been days when I've wanted to kill him ,
And others when he's filled me with pride,
Days when I wanted him out of my sight ,
Yet others, I needed him by my side.
He soon realised that I'm always right ,
It's the same with me day in , & day out,
He is quiet , a very deep thinker,
His motto , A whisper conveys more than a shout.!!
I like very much the sound of my voice,
Can talk from morning till night ,
I'm sure poor old Tel can still hear my voice,
Even when I am long out of sight.
He has stood by my side , solid as a rock ,
Have to say he is a real treasure,
He has dried my tears , & stood by my side,
The few times life gave me short measure.
Together we will stay for the rest of our lives,
Walking into the sunset hand in hand,
As I look back , & reflect on time passed ,
The last 40 years have been grand!!

sorry not a food (gardening) post but just read about dahlias and someone was asking a while ago......
Never grown these before this summer! Hopefully someone here has grown before....
I have got loads of tomatoes on my plants which are still green due to the weather not being hot enough to ripen them. Can I ripen them indoors? Don't want them to go to waste
Jools
Hi
I know I'm very early, but how do we go about choosing what the cook along for october is? Anyone know? I'm all new to this.

... there are a couple of peppers on two of my plants, but the newer younger leaves have all got loads of tiny holes in them, they look quite pretty like lace, I am loath to use a pesticide spray on them, because of pollenation.
what would you do?

This is the first year that I have grown vegetables in my back garden. I was wondering what i should be doing to get it ready for winter. I have courgette and squash plants going bananas, Runner beans which are still producing and also tomato plants that have fruit on them
When they have finished what should I do with them? Will they grow back next year or will I have to start again?
What can I put in the ground at this time of year to grow?
Sorry for all the questions but i am a complete novice at this but its something that I have enjoyed doing and intend to dig a bigger plot for next year.
thanks Jools
I am so cross. This is the first year that I have grown veg in my back yard. I noticed when i got back from Holiday that I had a lovely butternut squash growing on my plant. I checked it on the weekend and it was almost ready to pick. Went out to pick it this morning and it has gone. Someone has come into my garden and taken it. I am really upset and angry that someone would do this to me.
me- taking cuttings- rosemary, different sages etc and potting up bits and bobs- delphiniums/ echinaceas and verbenas that i grew from seed this year.
what you up to in the garden/greenhouse or shed at the mo?!
I read with interest that todays ROTD is chicken catch a tory, as its using up plenty of ripe red tom's perfect for this time of the year.....well....................
Loved it, wonderful flavour......
Hi cooked this tonight. It was really nice. I cut the fat off and the meat itself was really tender. I had plenty of sauce left -it wasn't dry or crunchy at all. I did use a small sauce pan so not sure it that was why there was lots of sauce left
I would definately make this again although I would not use belly pork as thought it was quite fatty

Hi All
Just thought I'd let you know that I tried the cook along pork receipe last night and I have to say i really didn't like it. I followed the intructions to the letter and didn't use any alternative ingredients. The coating on the pork was quite nice but that was it. the pork it self was far too fatty and after three peices made me feel sick, the veggies were too raw after cooking them slightly longer than suggested and they had no flavour and everything was really dry. Sorry to say, I'm not a fan, which is a shame as I was so looking forward making something new after my little set back of late. OH and I both chucked it in the bin. Had to make him a tin of soup! Has anyone else tried it and liked it?
I understand home grown garlic is fabulous for flavour and easy to grow.
Is it just a matter of planting cloves in the soil in October? I am going to get a large planter from the garden centre and put it in my parents garden.
Do I just use normal garlic cloves from the supermarket or need I go to a garden centre? Any advice appreciated as I;ve never grown anything before!
