and as I can't sleep I'm sitting here fantasising about a wonderful breakfast I was introduced to by a client last year.

Mackerel fillet dipped in milk then rolled in oatmeal; fried briefly til brown and crispy but still nice and moist inside; served with well done rashers of dry cured smoked streaky bacon. I thought it sounded weird but tasted divine. It did help the mackerel had only been caught that morning!

Anyone else tried this? Forgotten about it til now. Know what will be on my shopping list tomorrow.

ooh that sounds good DS- sorry thick question but is oatmeal the same as porridge oats or different (perhaps finer?) ?

It's finer treehugger - not flakes.

We both love mackeral and have it quite a lot - can often buy really fresh ones from our Saturday farmers market and we have it for lunch with just bread and butter. if you have an Aga the best way to cook it is to wrap in several layers of newspapers, really soak the parcel in water then bake it till the paper is dry. The paper peels away all the skin and you are left with lovely succulent perfectly cooked flesh!

We had a knock at the door last Saturday asking if we'd like to buy some "fresh fish fillets" - afraid I said "no thank you" - first of all, hadn't a clue who they were, they didn't sound local and I have no idea what fish they were or where they came from also, it's usually to be offered whole fish, not fillets - was I being to suspicious do you think?

Not tried that TDS but have copied and pasted it to try, love mackeral with gooseberry sauce and also with a mustard sauce.

Oh you have had my mouth watering at this because it has reminded me how my Grannie used to cook herring. I buy the fine oatmeal when I'm up in Fraserburgh and do herring this way.... As you say DS, the crispy skin is the best bit !! Not had bacon with it though, must try that. Mackerel are absolutely wonderful if eaten within hours of catching. We used to chuck a line over the side of our boat when we were going back into harbour and within half an hour I had them on the plate and they were superb.
