Does anyone have any direct experience of the WSET?
They provide recognised qualifications for sommeliers, wine merchants etc, but also claim that their courses can be enjoyed by non-professionals.
Am thinking of sending the Boy on the one day foundation course as a Christmas present, but it's a bit pricey - I don't want to waste money on something that will be unsuitable for a keen amateur.
Any insight gratefully received,

hi TOM- i have done several of the WSET courses, but quite a few years ago now. It is great and really interesting- and useful.
I did find the higher courses were quite daunting as I was quite young at the time, and was petrified as soon as it came to reading out the tasting notes in a hall full of people i found quite intimidating! I guess a days foundation would be a bit different to that- and it may have changed since i did the courses (more friendly-less snooty if you know what i mean!). But i think if he is keen he will love it - its a really nice idea.
Did it some years ago noe TOM,
thoroughly enjoyed it but as Treehugger says it can be a bit intimidating.
Got the diploma somewhere, must dig it out sometime.
Brilliant idea for a Christmas present.
I'm taking my 2007 present in December at the Olive Tree Restaurant Cookery class, so really looking forward to that.

Yes I did my intermediate and advanced certificates a few years ago and really enjoyed them. I I think Sothebys also do courses that i've heard good things about
That's very helpful everyone, thank you. I think I'll go ahead and book the one day course.
We had a 'no gifts' wedding, but as people insisted we ended up creating a list with a local wine merchant - now we have lots of nice wine that we don't know much about, it'll be great to learn more.
