Sausages
Thursday 20 November 16:52

Anyone fancy going on the Dragons' Den and get funding for the development and production of a flat sausage? Having done some experiments I have discovered that a flat sausage cooks evenly on both side and cooks in half the time. Could be a world beater.

Quiet this week!
Thursday 20 November 16:37

Is it just me or has the site been quiet this week? This isn't the most interesting post ever but thought I'd start the ball rolling on weekend cooking plans. We did absolutely nothing last weekend but this weekend is chocker bloc. We have friends over tomorrow night so am cooking roast lamb with anchovies and garlic, dauphinois potatoes and broccolli. Might try and make lemon possett tonight as a pud if can find good recipe. Saturday busy but no refreshments my responsibility thank goodness! Sunday we have 8 for lunch and am doing roast chicken with all the works plus Nigella's sticky chocolate pudding so hopefully everyone will be groaning afterwards with general fullness and contentedness!

Somerfield  (5 Replies)
Thursday 20 November 15:47

I don't shop there and consider it a rubbish shop. I've been there to take an elderly neighbour shopping. Anyway, I had to go into Crediton and was in need of haricot beans. Somerfield sold no dried pulses only tinned ones, which I didn't buy. Are these stores always so useless?

Does anyone have any direct experience of the WSET?

They provide recognised qualifications for sommeliers, wine merchants etc, but also claim that their courses can be enjoyed by non-professionals.

Am thinking of sending the Boy on the one day foundation course as a Christmas present, but it's a bit pricey - I don't want to waste money on something that will be unsuitable for a keen amateur.

Any insight gratefully received,

Martini xx

Do I just change it on my profile, is it that easy?

Celery soup - leaves or not?  (9 Replies)
Wednesday 19 November 14:47

Hello
I love celery soup and often make it and this time I have managed to buy some celery which is the good old fashioned full head of celery with all its lovely leaves (normally I can only get the trimmed stuff). So I was all ready to get going on the soup - stock on the boil made from ham bone when I wondered whether to put the leaves from the celery into the soup as well. I prefer to liquidise my soup right down to smooth texture. What do you think....will they enhance the flavour or be too bitter?

I think it is sad John has decided to pull out of come dancing . Surely they must have known how good (or bad ) he was when they asked him to do the show ? . Sat nights wont be the same after Sat when he does his farewell dance . Susan x

Working for the Gibraltar Pound  (2 Replies)
Wednesday 19 November 11:29

Those people in the U.K. suffering from the present harsh economic climate have my greatest sympathy, however, here in Gibraltar we have an even larger problem.

Not only do we face many of the ecomonic problems facing the U.K. but we also have the exchange rate for the Pound to take into account.

The currency in Gibraltar is the Pound Sterling and the Euro in Spain.

Accommodation to rent or buy is very limited in Gibraltar forcing many people to live across the border in Spain. So we have the position of earning money in Pounds Sterling and paying living expenses in Euros.

12-15 months ago the exchange rate was about 1.40 Euros to the Pound. Now it is abour 1.12 . Fortunately, I have a good income but for those on low incomes this is no joke.

Well ... I've had my rant!

Morning!

Has anyone else tried these? Im quite impressed. Half price in Sainsburys at the mo so Im gonna take a walk and get a few more packs later as only 99p instead of 1.99.

So far I used a chicken one to spread over a roast chicken and it was brill, and made veg soup with the veg one, also very nice.

Good for those of use who don't make our own!

Flapjack got me thinking about fish...  (6 Replies)
Wednesday 19 November 05:46

and as I can't sleep I'm sitting here fantasising about a wonderful breakfast I was introduced to by a client last year.

Mackerel fillet dipped in milk then rolled in oatmeal; fried briefly til brown and crispy but still nice and moist inside; served with well done rashers of dry cured smoked streaky bacon. I thought it sounded weird but tasted divine. It did help the mackerel had only been caught that morning!

Anyone else tried this? Forgotten about it til now. Know what will be on my shopping list tomorrow.

old fashioned sayings  (40 Replies)
Tuesday 18 November 17:38

seem to remember a thread on a similar subject a while ago...
when my Dad was here recently he came out with several sayings 'his granny used to say' (i think he was winding me up with some of them?!)
but i'd love you to share any that you know- or that your 'granny used to say'
(and i mean the old fashioned ones like 'keep your hand on your ha'pennies' or 'keep your breath to cool your porridge'!)
(- obviously food related if at all possible!!)

Sharing recipes with friends.  (19 Replies)
Tuesday 18 November 10:51

Just wondered if any of you willingly share your recipes - which you have perhaps devised yourself, or are old family tricks/ favourites?

When I have friends over for a meal and people say "you must give me the recipe for this" I sometimes am horrified and think I want it to be my own secret...!

Tasteless Lasagne  (14 Replies)
Monday 17 November 12:29

What am I doing wrong here? I've tried so many times to make a nice, tasty lasagne and it always seems to go quite soupy and a bit bland. I've tried cooking it for longer on a lesser heat which does help but I still find the meat sauce loses it's taste. I've tried Delia's ragu meat sauce that you cook in the oven for about 4 hours and also my own bolognaise recipe (which is a great success on its own). I don't know quite what to do to "beef it up" a bit more, the meat sauce just doesn't seem to be flavoursome enough. I have used minced pork and smoked bacon in the sauce. Maybe I'm using too much white sauce and its drowning the meat out, although I've followed Delia's recipe to the letter. Help please!

Thanksgiving Meal Traditional recipes  (7 Replies)
Monday 17 November 11:41

A group of neighbours with a variety of links with America
are planning to celebrate Thanksgiving this year with a dinner on Sat 29th Nov.
xxxx who is hosting is going to provide and roast the turkey and I will provide most of the rest.
Small problem ; need some ideas for starters/ veggies/ sauces/ puds etc.
I am quite a confident cook.... just need some inspiration and so far the magazines/supplements have not yet done a Thanksgiving feature.
